Five years ago this month, I made my first visit to Uganda and saw firsthand the enormous disparity that exists in countries around the world when it comes to water, our most essential resource. I was invited in one village to do the evening water run with the children, who often bear the brunt of gathering water for a family. It took us over two hours of walking down and then back up a mountainside to gather enough water to last just one single night. I have never looked at the sinks or shower in my home in the same way again, as I sadly realized just how much I had taken access to water for granted in my own life.

All this week, we've been raising funds to help children and their families have direct access to water right outside their homes. This makes an enormous difference in the lives of children, who sometimes miss class to fetch water and who suffer from stomach pain and ailments due to drinking water from contaminated ponds.Through our work in Uganda, we have found that rainwater harvesting is a sustainable solution that can help fulfill the basic human right to water.
